Our Mission

Our laboratory strives to understand and seek innovative solutions to pathologies of vascular, neuronal and bone tissues and organs, by applying our strengths in experimental biomaterials, biomechanics, image analysis, cellular and molecular biology, and tissue engineering. Our laboratory represents successful collaborations within the University of North Texas (UNT), and the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC), as well as outside collaborations at Cornell, UTA, UTSW, and USC, etc. We are training the researchers of tomorrow with cutting-edge ideas and technology in the following specific research areas:

  • Development of metallic cardiovascular stents and bone fixation devices
  • Polymer and metallic coatings on implants
  • Implants-tissue interface and interactions
  • Novel drug delivery vehicles and cellular and tissue uptake
  • Neurovascular defects and blood-brain barrier disfunctions
  • Alzheimer's disease, amyloid peptide, and oxidative stress

There are TWO main lines of rearch in our group:

  • Biodegradable metallic biometals for medical implants and tissue engineering
  • Ionic biometals homeostasis, its role in health and diseases like cardiovascular and neurological disorders
